waitwhat x RySHi - So Hard to Love (feat. Abby Sev)

before getting into the story behind this song, it's worth saying that this is our favorite song we've had the opportunity to work on so far. it takes waitwhat right back to its 2017ish roots, when "wall of sound" future bass was all the rage.

so we first started working on this song at the same time as our other song with RySHi, "What Remains," so it shares a similar backstory in that regard. RySHi already had a good chunk of the instrumentation laid out up to the first drop (including that incredible guitar), and Abby had already recorded all of the raw vocals for the song. from there, we expanded the song to its current structure and added our own flavor to it, and we are so happy with how it all came together. we hope you scream-sing along to Abby's vocals like we did the whole time we were producing it :)

Drives Me Wild (feat. Akacia)

so we'll need to go all the way back to 2017, right after Troy graduated college, to start this song's story. we made about 60% of this instrumental and really really liked what we had, so we slowly started shopping it around to singers/producers to collaborate on. we had a couple different situations that seemed like they would work out over the years, but nothing ever came of it. we still loved the beat, but let it slide to the back of our minds as we focused on our newer tracks in 2020 and beyond.

so in early February of 2021 we sent a different beat to Akacia to work together on, and much to our surprise she responded and seemed down to collaborate with us! we agreed that the particular beat we sent probably wouldn't be a good fit, but she was open to hearing some other demos. we sent this one over - at the time simply titled "uppity" - and Akacia jumped on it right away. we went through a couple rounds of revisions/recording and just kept getting more and more excited about what the song was turning into. though it was a very long journey, the song finally got to reach its full potential thanks to Akacia's amazing writing/performance and we couldn't be happier to finally release this baby of ours :)

Diamonds (feat. Daramola)

we were lucky enough to get a second song with Daramola, which we actually worked on right after finishing up "Do You Remember" despite how far apart the release dates are. one thing that makes this instrumental memorable is that a lot of the sounds come from an old hardware synthesizer from Damon's garage (a Korg KO-1 Kaossilator), and it was really fun to find all the different ways we could incorporate the synth into the song. the end result is high energy, a little crazy feeling at times, and hopefully a lot of fun to listen to :)

waitwhat x RySHi - What Remains (feat. Daisy Tyler)

so this song was made entirely mid-pandemic with two amazing artists that we'd never met or spoken with before. a mutual friend (Trenten, who also inspired our name "waitwhat"!) introduced us to RySHi, who on top of producing is an incredible guitar player. RySHi shared the original idea for this song with the guitar laid out, and we couldn't have been happier with it.

after we had the beat roughly finished, we randomly connected with Daisy on Reddit, and we couldn't have been luckier to do so. she was onboard from the start and immediately shared the vision for the song that RySHi and we had, and we were amazed by her lyrics and performance on this song! we hope you all like this song and enjoy it with some new friends like we did :)

Do You Remember (feat. Daramola)

so this is probably our gushiest, poppiest song yet and we love it lol. Daramola provided some excellent, catchy vocals (vocoder and all!) that were a ton of fun to work with. the beat for this track features a ton of different samples of Troy playing an old Korg Kaossilator KO-1 that Damon dug up in his garage, which gives the whole song a very unique texture. overall this one turned out super chill and groovy, and we hope you dig it :)

waitwhat x Sweez - One Last Time

pretty much back to back with releases here! after dropping the remix for Vanic on Monday (which was incredibly cool for us), we have another track that means a lot to us. first off, we've been friends via music with Sweez since he reached out to remix his track "Brokenhearted" with MRG back in February 2019. since then, we've been in contact frequently to talk music, critique demos, and try some original song ideas out. he sent these vocals to us back in July and we had a feeling pretty quickly that this was going to be our first original release together. we're super excited to be getting something out with him again after the remix! another cool thing about this song is that it features Troy on the guitar, which he has been trying to teach himself since the covid lockdowns started (i'm still very bad lol - Troy). and finally, this track keeps very true to our name and doesn't quite fit in the genre-lane that many of our previous releases have. it's still 1000% us though, hope this one makes you say "wait, what?" :)

Vanic - So Slow (feat. K.Flay) (waitwhat remix)

this remix is pretty special to us, as we've always personally been fans of Vanic since before we were even creating music ourselves. one of my (Troy's) favorite life experiences was going to Snowglobe music festival in 2015, where Vanic was performing. Vanic's "Snowtape" mix leading up to that festival was constantly in rotation, and it's just crazy to think we had the chance to chat with him and remix one of his releases (with K.Flay no less - legendary in her own right!). so this was an incredibly memorable experience for us, and we hope you like the way we doubled down on the theme of moving too slow :)

Sad Boi (feat. Emilia Ali)

we had this beat finished up in the summer of 2019, and we were together in Chicago to see Lollapalooza (which was incredible - and very hot) when we were able to confirm getting Emilia on this track with us. it was a great news to add to an amazing trip! when we made the instrumental we had the idea of two opposites being together or portraying some sort of dichotomy, which we think comes through in comparing the bright choruses to the brooding verses. Emilia picked up on that right away and added the perfect lyrics, melody, and vocal performance, and even helped us restructure the track a bit to really emphasize the stark contrast between the verses and hooks. we're super happy with how this one turned out, it's unique and a bit of an emotional roller coaster :) hope you can relate and that it brings you mad joy!!

Tep No - "Sippin' On Feelings (SEPPIE & waitwhat remix)"

sorry about the delay on the post - lots going on in the world and our lives right now. but this is probably our most exciting post yet! this song is special for a few reasons, not the least of which being that it's with our long time collaborator and friend Joey (SEPPIE). some may remember our remix to "Sugar We're Goin' Down," which was our first track to be played at EDC (shout out to Yultron!). very cool to say that we both got our first track on a major label together. it was also an absolute pleasure working with Tep No and his team, who all could not have been nicer/more helpful as we worked through our first proper release. thank you U Management and Ultra Records :) in terms of the song itself, we wanted to make a fun and summery song that people can groove to at home and feel like they're at the beach. quarantine for so long has been tough and monotonous, so we hope this brings a little splash of energy to your day!

Samsonite & waitwhat - Somebody (feat. Kristen Scheltens)

Damon met Kristen towards the end of 2019 at a show in the city, and shortly after they met again in Oakland to introduce Troy and talk about releasing some music together. after agreeing on a couple songs, we booked some studio time at Skyline Studios and managed to record two full tracks worth of vocals in 2 hours. this was our first time being at the studio with a singer while recording, and it was great to have some more input and be directly involved in the recording process. it was a blast getting to work with Kristen on this, and can't wait for another song down the road!

we had been fans of Samsonite since 2017, when we became obsessed with his song "Less Than 3." we randomly stumbled upon his email online in early 2020, and we decided to reach out with a couple works in progress and a raw version of these vocals. he loved the vocals so we agreed to work on this track together, and we couldn't be happier that he was willing to collaborate with us. crazy that we get to work with people that we were just fans of not too long ago! this track was a lot of fun to make with an awesome group of people, hope you enjoy :)

graves - Deadsong (feat. 93FEETOFSMOKE) (tyler lawrence X waitwhat remix)

this all got started when our friend Tyler tagged us in one of graves's tweets, where he announced he was going to be dropping the stems to Deadsong. Tyler got this one started and sent it our way to finish up. we worked on it separately for a bit then got together for a session where we finalized most of the track. luckily we had this wrapped up before all of the covid craziness started! can't wait to play this one at shows once we're able to again :)

MRG - "Brokenhearted (feat. Sweez) (waitwhat remix)"

Sweez reached out to us sometime around summer 2019 with the original track, which ended up being one of the singles off of MRG's album "Live from the Hurst 2" (which is dope you should check it out). we were super excited and jumped at the opportunity to work with these two, who ended up being some of the nicest guys you could meet. we loved the original song, and once we heard the vocals in isolation we knew we where we wanted to take the remix. while the original focuses on the dark side of a breakup, this track tries to find a silver lining: being too young to be weighed down by it. huge thank you to MRG, Sweez, and Westvilla music for seeing this through, so happy it's finally out everywhere!

People Change (feat. JLa)

we got introduced to JLa through a mutual friend and instantly shared a vision for this track together. this song comes from a place we all can relate to: realizing that a break up is a good thing. working with JLa on this release has been a blast, and we can't believe we'll be making our first music video for this song in the next few weeks :)

Major Lazer - "Know No Better (waitwhat/hot-tea edit)"

our latest track is up on our good friend Sasha's SoundCloud (HOT TEA). Troy started this track as a bit of a joke and snapped the drop bass to Damon. as always, Damon had the ear to realize that was something to actually work with, so we made a rough skeleton of the track. Damon showed Sasha the track at that point, and he took over to turn it into what it is now!
